Transfer: Akpom joins Ajax from Middlesbrough
Chuba Akpom’s transfer to Eredivisie powerhouse Ajax has been successfully finalized.
The footballer, who previously played for Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship, has inked a five-year contract with the Amsterdam-based club.
To secure Akpom’s services, Ajax has agreed to a transfer fee amounting to €12.3 million, along with an additional €2 million in potential add-ons for the forward’s contributions.
Interestingly, the 27-year-old was on the brink of joining Ligue 1 club RC Lens in the previous week, but the deal fell through at the eleventh hour.
Akpom, born in Nigeria, rose to prominence as the leading scorer in the Championship during the prior season, netting an impressive 28 goals from 38 league appearances.
As he begins this new chapter in his career, Akpom will proudly sport jersey number 10 for his new team.
His acquisition by Ajax places him in the company of other Nigerian football greats, such as Finidi George, Kanu Nwankwo, Tijani Babangida, Sunday Oliseh, and Pius Ikedia, who have all contributed to the success of the European champions.
