Qualifying for 2024 Olympics next target for Super Falcons – Plumptre

Ashleigh Plumptre has emphasized that the Super Falcons are setting their sights on securing a position in the 2026 Olympic Games. Following their impressive performance at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the former African champions garnered significant praise.

Under Randy Waldrum’s guidance, the team maintained an unbeaten record in the group stage. They held the Olympic champions, Canada, to a goalless draw and secured maximum points against the co-hosts, Australia. However, the Super Falcons faced elimination in the Round of 16 at the hands of England’s Three Lionesses, who secured victory with a 4-2 penalty shootout.

Looking ahead, the West Africans are gearing up to face Ethiopia in October for the initial round of qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Ashleigh Plumptre expressed the importance of this recent performance, stating, “This achievement sets the standard for us. Our goal is to consistently compete with these formidable teams, and we aspire to have demonstrated just that,” in a conversation with the BBC.

It’s noteworthy that the Super Falcons have encountered difficulties in qualifying for the past three editions of the Olympics.
