Lionel Messi reveals origin of new Marvel superhero celebrations

Inter Miami’s captain, Lionel Messi, has unveiled the source of inspiration behind his recent Marvel superhero-themed celebrations.

Fans were taken aback when Messi introduced an unconventional celebration after netting a goal for Inter Miami in their Leagues Cup victory against Atlanta United. The renowned seven-time Ballon d’Or winner emulated the gesture associated with Thor, the mighty hammer-wielding character, which swiftly gained traction across social media, becoming a viral sensation.

In the subsequent match against Orlando City, Messi referenced Black Panther, making the iconic “Wakanda Forever” salute upon scoring a goal. Similarly, during the game against Charlotte FC, he sealed the victory with a fourth goal and celebrated by mimicking Spiderman’s iconic web-slinging pose.

In an interview with the Miami Herald ahead of Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup final against Nashville SC, Messi shared the origins of these superhero celebrations. He attributed the idea to his three children, who were on vacation and enjoying Marvel superhero movies.

“My children came up with the idea and asked me that every time I score a goal in a game, I should do a Marvel superhero celebration,” Messi explained. “That’s how it all began, and we continued the tradition. Each time we watched a new movie, we practiced the goal celebration. But I only do them during home games when my children are here, close to me, so we can share those moments.”

Messi concluded by emphasizing the significance of his children’s presence, stating, “I perform these celebrations when I spot them in the stands. That’s when it all comes to life.”
